Unapologetic

I am writing this here for catharsis and because I refuse to clog Facebook with a rant like this, even with all of 3 readers. (<3 you guys).  This is what I would post on Facebook today:

I voted for President Obama and I'm not ashamed. I voted for President Obama and I'm not ignorant, uneducated, uninformed, or lazy. In fact, I have a law degree, am well-read, and I stay informed on current events.  I don't live off the government. I work hard and so does my husband. We pay taxes. We are "responsible" for our lives. So are many of my friends and colleagues who also re-elected the president. Some of the smartest and kindest people I know.

I don't expect government handouts but my experience tells me that there are people in our country much less fortunate and in many ways through no fault of their own who do need help. My career is dedicated to serving the underprivileged. While it is true that some poor people take advantage of government benefits, it is also true that big corporations and the wealthy take advantage of them, too. Entitlement isn't just a poor problem. You might want to put all the blame on the President for economic state of the country, but how about taking individual responsibility, too? For example, stop supporting chains like Walmart that sell you mass produced products from other countries with terrible working conditions, and buy local. Don't spend beyond your means and then complain about paying taxes. You don't really need to spend $500 on the latest I-phone, do you? How about you volunteer to mentor someone who needs job training? And how about you give credit where it's due? If you bought a house this year, the record low mortgage rates are thanks to the government policies.

I'm not blind to the fact that our system is in need of reform and that our national debt is a problem. I just don't believe that cutting spending on important things like investing in sustainable energy and education is the way  to do it. Investments are important- and all business-minded people should know this. I also don't believe that the private health care industry can be expected to provide reasonable health care for the average person, and I do believe that we are spending a lot of money on the uninsured. I believe it will take more than 4 years to get out of the mess that was made during the Bush years.

Besides all that, while Mitt Romney himself has led an impressive life, his party stands for the oppression of minorities- they support the "show your papers" law in Arizona, they want to force their particular brand of religion on gay and lesbian people who want to get married, and while they moan about government intervening in their lives, they are okay with the government interfering with women's lives when it comes to contraception and child-bearing. I could never get behind a party who operates in one exclusive world-view.

So the next time you decide to post some hateful comment about how stupid more than half of your fellow citizens are, consider that you are publicly pigeon-holing more than half of the county into a category that just isn't fair, and is not reality. No, I didn't vote for him "just because he's black." That is offensive. No, I'm not ignorant. No, I'm not stupid. No, I'm not blind to the problems that our nation is facing. I just have a different view on how to move forward, and I'm trying (perhaps too hard) to respect your differences by not belittling you on Facebook with rash and offensive generalizations about people who voted for Romney (and believe me, I have plenty).

Thanks,

Your fellow Citizen.

  2. I had no idea you had a blog, you are a great writer! I couldn't agree more, you've put it beautifully. I especially love your last part about how it seems like all the other side can do is belittle people who disagree with them instead of discussing the real issues with truthful facts and respect for other's opinions. Now if only we could stop being so divided and actually work on solving issues... <3

  4. Agree with you on all accounts except the husband, law degree and well read things. Wish there was a better way for healthcare...I didn't have health insurance until I had my first corporate job at 23 and my parents are never consistent. :P
